'The beginner's physical theatre course for adults contains a large spectrum of exercises coming from my very diverse experience. However, two of the main pillars of what I offer are the Suzuki method of Actor training and the Viewpoints. The Suzuki method of Actor training originated from Japanese theatre director Tadashi Suzuki's desire to " restore the whole of the human body in the theatrical context," and his methods ask a great deal of precision, focus and discipline.
My experience is that Suzuki training is like "warrior training," leading students to the edges of their potential...of burning presence and energy.I liken it to the martial arts of theatre. On the flip side, the Viewpoints training is one of reawakening the actor's instincts and spontaneity, strongly developing not only a rich physical vocabulary, but also a heightened ability to operate in ensemble.
We dissect and explore the basic elements of performance- the body in time and space- to enable the actor to use them articulately in devising and performing. This is like allowing your inner three year old to meet your adult self.
Building an atmosphere of trust and support are at the forefront of my classes, and I find that from this place some wonderful flourishing can occur, in the individual and the ensemble. Please let me know if you have any more questions and if you'd like to enrol.' (Damara Sylvster)
