What is Hapū Wānanga?
This initiative aims to engage whānau expecting a baby who would not usually attend any form of antenatal education and offers a 2-day, kaupapa Māori style pregnancy and parenting programme. The course incorporates practical activities, traditional Māori birth pūrākau (stories) and uses a range of medium to communicate pregnancy, birth and early parenting information.
Who can attend?
While this programme targets Māori whānau by using tikanga Māori and traditional birthing concepts, this forum is open to all. Hapū māmā (pregnant mums) are encouraged to bring along their partner/support whānau. Also, dependant tamariki are welcome to accompany hapū māmā (you don’t have to be a first-time parent).
There is no cost to attend - kai (food) is provided on the day and assistance with transport to/from the wānanga is available. Whānau who complete the 2 days (9am – 3pm) will receive their choice of wahakura or Pēpi pod and a koha pack full of goodies to welcome their new addition.
How can I register?
Places are limited to approximately 10 hapū whānau per wānanga, with priority given to wāhine further along in their pregnancy, young māmā, Māori, Pacific or others as circumstance requires. Ask your LMC, health professional or other community health kaimahi for more information.
