Matariki Mushrooms are delighted to announce a full day of fungi education at the Riverside Community Centre. Join in one or both Mushroom Cultivation Workshops. This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of mushrooms, whether you are taking your very first steps or ready to extend your cultivation skills to the next level.
The Beginner’s Workshop (9:30 am – 1 pm, $90pp) is designed for anyone curious about fungi and eager to grow their own gourmet mushrooms at home. We will explore the ecology of fungi, discuss their role in food security, and then move into a hands-on session where you will create your own grow kit and spawn to take home. Mushrooms are a sustainable, high-protein food that can be grown on simple, low-cost materials—you will be enjoying your first harvest within weeks.
The Advanced Workshop (1:45 – 5 pm, $110pp) is tailored for those who have attended our introduction or who already have a basic foundation. This session skips the entry-level material and dives deeper into practical cultivation. You will learn to inoculate logs with a native shiitake strain, prepare dowels for future log projects, and practice cloning fungi into liquid culture, with a focus on Pekepeke-kiore (native lion’s mane). Participants will head home with their own inoculated log and a jar of culture to continue their journey.
Matraiki Musrooms is looking forward to seeing you there.
