About the Event

Have you always wanted to explore clay as a medium – and ideally end up with a useful item to enjoy every day at home – or give it to a loved one as a testament to your newfound skill? Have you got very little or no experience with pottery?

Are you attracted to clay techniques but don't have the time or financial means to invest in one of the multi-session courses on offer elsewhere?

Then this hand-built pottery workshop is for you!

Although Tanja has learned to “throw” (use a potter's wheel) from master potters in France, her passion is to share the very basic and yet 100% successful skills of shaping a ball of clay into a beautiful and functional piece, using nothing but your hands. If a 5-year-old child can create a gorgeous breakfast bowl, so can you!

Tanja will help participants in this introductory session to gain a feel for the clay, create a “pot” (which can be a bowl, vase, plant pot or abstract piece of art) and personalise it.

You can either take your artwork home as it is on the day – or you can leave it with Tanja who will organise for your work to be fired (this is included in the price but will take some time).

This workshop is creative, 100% hands-on and can potentially get you wet and messy – please dress accordingly :) Clay stains may not wash out of some fabrics.

If the weather is right, this workshop will be held in the garden of the beautiful Riverside Café. If it is raining, we will find some cover elsewhere – please keep an eye on your emails after registration.

Limited to 10 participants, 14 years and older. Bookings are essential. Bookings close Friday, 9th February at 2pm.

This workshop is proudly sponsored by the Riverside Community Trust. Please contact Tanja (at education@riverside.org.nz) for workshop questions or to ask about sponsorship options.
