About the Event

Pottery is the art or craft of making objects (like dishes and vases, but also sculptures in many forms) out of clay.

There is nothing that feels quite like having your hands in clay. The tactile experience of kneading, shaping, and decorating what is essentially a piece of our earth, is grounding and calming...people of all ages are drawn to it. If you have ever squished a ball of clay in your hands, you understand what I mean :)

Pottery, and other ancient practices such as mindfulness and yoga, can be therapeutic; ceramicists have long argued the restorative benefits of creating with clay. It is a physical-sensual-mental experience that doesn't require words. The physicality and limitless potential for creativity engages our muscles, fine motor skills, vision, and imagination – it is gentle and forgiving. And kids love it.

Tanja and Faline will help participants in this introductory workshop to gain a feel for the clay, create a simple plate and personalise it.

This session is creative, 100% hands-on and potentially very messy – please dress (yourself and your children) accordingly :) Clay stains may not wash out of some fabrics.

Limited to 10 participants 8 years and older (younger kids are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult). $10 per participant. Booking essential.

This workshop is proudly sponsored by the Riverside Community Trust. Please contact Tanja (education@riverside.org.nz) to discuss sponsorship options if you are struggling to meet the workshop fee or to enquire about more info.
