Matariki Mushrooms are excited to host two in-depth mushroom growing workshops at Riverside Community Centre this May. These sessions offer a chance to step into the world of mushroom growing, whether you are completely new or ready to build on existing knowledge.

The Beginner Workshop will take place on Saturday, 9th May, from 1:30 pm to 5 pm ($90 per person). This session is perfect for anyone wanting to start growing gourmet mushrooms at home. Together, we explore how fungi function in nature, their potential for local food resilience, and the basics of cultivation. The practical component will guide you through creating your own take-home grow kit and spawn using simple, accessible materials. Participants will need to bring two clean 2-Litre ice-cream containers with fitted lids.

The Advanced Workshop follows on Saturday, 30th May, from 1:30 pm to 5 pm ($110 per person). Designed for those with prior experience, this session moves beyond the fundamentals into applied techniques. Participants will learn how to inoculate logs with shiitake, prepare dowels for future projects, and begin cloning fungi into liquid culture, including work with Pekepeke-kiore, the native lion’s mane.

These hands-on sessions are ideal for gardeners, growers, and anyone curious about sustainable food production. Spaces are limited. To reserve your place, please email us: matariki.mushrooms@gmail.com.

Light refreshments will be available, and all materials are provided. These workshops are part of our ongoing commitment to community education and resilient local food systems. Join us for a practical and inspiring learning experience.

Hope you can make it.
