Due to popular demand, we are offering a second pretzel making workshop for children.
Who doesn't like pretzels? While most of us will have eaten more than one in our lifetime – not many can say they have actually made a pretzel...now your child could be one of those few!
The pretzel's real origins are as tangled as its shape. Legend traces it to medieval Europe, where Italian monks reportedly created treats to reward schoolchildren by baking dough with arms shaped in prayer. The tradition spread through Europe, and pretzels became associated with good luck and eternal love.
Basically, soft pretzels are just yeast bread that is formed into a pretzel shape. The one big difference in pretzel making, as opposed to regular bread making, is that pretzels are boiled and then baked. It is the boiling that gives the outside of the pretzel its beautiful golden brown colour and uniquely crisp and chewy texture. The great thing is that once you have the dough, you can make any shape you like!
Please note: we will be working with standard white flour and butter in this workshop, so it is not suitable for anyone with a gluten and/or dairy intolerance. We will also be working with boiling hot water, which is why children under 8 need the close attention of their accompanying adults.
Each child will make a yummy big pretzel each - and eat it of course!
This workshop is limited to 12 children, so get in early.
This workshop is proudly sponsored by the Riverside Community Trust. Please contact Tanja (education@riverside.org.nz) to discuss sponsorship options if you are struggling to meet the workshop fee or to enquire about more info.
