A message from Tanja Pauls, Riverside Education Programme manager:
I am super excited to introduce our very own clay space! Riverside Community's Clay Play Club will be just that - a place for people of all ages to play with clay. Pottery to the people!
Over the last two years, I have organised several clay-based workshops for children, adults, and mixed groups working together. We have made plates, cups, bowls, candle houses, magical beasts and cute creatures. While these sessions were fun and rewarding, the logistics of creating with clay without having a dedicated space were challenging. Setting up and cleaning up, in particular, took a lot of time, and we often depended on good weather. Now, finally, after a whole lot of shuffling and re-organising, we have a decent-sized room with good lighting, ample workspace, two wheels, and even...drumroll!... a kiln!
No more transporting of fragile projects, no more long waiting times, no more relying on the generosity of local potters to have our work fired.
We have also purchased a wide range of glazing materials and are ready to take the next step on the journey.
There is a lot to discover and learn together, and I am excited to share this with all of you!
So come along to perhaps have a turn on the wheel, try your hand at slabbing or pinching, or check out this new space over a piece of cake and a cuppa.
Although I will not run a formal workshop during this occasion, I will be around to share some tips and tricks. Please bring some koha to cover materials (recommended $10 per adult, $5 per child).
If you want to, you can also become a member of the Clay Play Club – more details will be revealed on the day!
The Clay Play Club is located in the Octagon – at the back of the Riverside Joinery, accessible from Community Road – right next to our milk vending shed. Look out for some balloons!
